A Journey Through Malayalam Cinema, 2024

2024 marked the rise of Malayalam cinema, with films like Bramayugam and Manjummel Boys showcasing innovative storytelling and technical brilliance. These films, along with others such as Ullozhukku and Kishkindha Kaandam, have captivated audiences with their compelling narratives, emotional depth, and exceptional performances, making Malayalam cinema a must-watch for all.

Among South Indian cinema, the Malayalam movie industry has always been ahead of its time. Subtler, is more mature and realistic, unlike its larger-than-life Tamil and Telugu counterparts. Until the COVID lockdown, mostly Malayalis enjoyed them, but with the advent of OTT channels, Malayalam movies have gained huge popularity Across India. The stories, dialogues, and technical aspects set the Malayalam industry far apart from the others, and a larger audience has been accepting the change.

2024 witnessed the Rise and Rise of Malayalam, many superhit movies that have raked in the moolah, with their sheer brilliance in stories and technicalities. Here’s my pick, the list of the Top 5 Malayalam Movies of 2024.

  1. Bramayugam- Airing on SONY LIV- Genre: Horror

Rarely does such a magnificent piece of art come by, upping the level of not only Malayalam, but Indian film industry. A horror thriller, shot entirely in monochrome. Eerie and dark, Bramayugam freezes you with its stills and powerful background music. There are just 3 characters, and the story is about a poor farmer who gets lost in the jungle, only to find refuge in a dilapidated mansion, with a landlord and his servant being the only occupants.

The roaring laughter, the screams, the distant hooting of owls, oh, the sound effects are so effective, they create a lasting impact. The photography is excellent, be it the torrential rains, or the spider silently spinning its web. Arjun Ashokan performs very well, as a scared and lost soul, a prisoner in a sinister mansion. Siddharth Bharatan is great too, his character’s indifference and arrogance, are a delight to watch. But, it’s Mammooty all the way, menacing and monstrous. There’s nothing this man cannot do. Bramayugam is a dazzling display of acting, storyline, cinematography, and technical brilliance, a Must-Watch.

  • Manjummel Boys- airing on Disney Hotstar- Genre: Thriller

Yet another jewel, one of those that keeps you glued to your seats throughout, making you wonder why it got over so soon.  Adapted from a true-life episode, the story as such is simple, it’s a rescue drama. A group of 10 youngsters rebelliously enter the highly restricted Guna Caves region in Kodaikanal and one of them meets with a terrible accident, falling into a deep crevice. When the whole world gives up on him, his friends stay put.

What makes Manjummel Boys truly stand out is its masterful treatment and execution. The rescue operation is so gripping that I found myself clutching the edge of my seat multiple times. The film not only delivers intense suspense but also deeply tugs at your heartstrings, reaffirming your faith in the power of friendship and the resilience of the human spirit. I don’t typically shed tears while watching movies, but this one had my eyes welling up with joy and emotion.

The cinematography is top-notch. The pouring rains make your heart race with anticipation. And the misty mountains look majestic but scary, you can’t help but realize that nature is all-powerful, humans stand helpless amidst it’s fury. The background music amplifies the thrill factor.

Can’t Be Missed.

  • Ullozhukku: Airing on Prime Video- Genre: Drama, Emotions

A masterpiece, with a deep story and brilliant performances by its 2 powerful female protagonists.
The story revolves around Anju (played by Parvathy) who serves her ailing husband till he passes on. Post his death, she desires to start life afresh. But her grieving mother-in-law Leelamma (Urvashi) doesn’t let her go, as she’s carrying Leelamma’s grandchild.

The depth of emotions and the many layers in the story are revealed as the movie unfolds. The 2 women in question gradually understand the lies and deceit they have been subjected to. There are emotional outbursts and mental turmoil, all handled so subtly and naturally that you can’t help empathizing with both of them.

Parvathy is excellent as ever, a perfect blend of tears and laughter. But it’s Urvashi Maam who takes the cake. Can’t imagine anyone else playing Leelamma so well, she breathes life into every frame.

With the scenic Kuttanadu and Kerala floods in the backdrop, Ullozhukku makes for a compelling watch. Exploring the various aspects of human emotions, this one too has to be experienced.

  • Kishkindha Kaandam: Airing on Disney Hotstar- Genre: Mystery

I would rather call it the peak of movie-making brilliance. A fine mix of emotions, relationships, wildlife, and a very unpredictable climax.

Set in the backdrop of thick Idukki jungles and monkeys, the cinematography is beautiful. As for the story, I haven’t seen anything like this before. Fresh, Different, Compelling.

Veteran actor Vijay Raghavan shines in his career-best performance as a difficult ex-army officer with memory problems. He has misplaced his service revolver, his grandson has gone missing, and he can’t recollect what exactly happened that day.  Asif Ali as the distraught son, delivers a nuanced performance, he portrays the part so effortlessly. Aparna Balamurali is very good too.

With great acting, a riveting storyline, and a rare twist, Kishkindha Kaandam excels. Worth every penny and minute.

  • Aavesham: Airing on Amazon Prime Video- Genre: Comedy

I honestly cannot recall when was the last time I laughed so much, when I clapped so loud, captivated by this fast, furious, and very funny movie, Avesham.

There’s not much of a story to tell, rather, this one has to be experienced, firsthand. 3 youngsters getting involved with a gangster, smoking, making merry, and later unsuccessfully attempting to break away, this is what Avesham is all about.

Then what’s so special? The swag, oh the swag. The sleek and stylish songs and what music!! The action sequences are oh so snazzy, with the kicks, the cars, the swords, and yes, all that slow motion. I haven’t seen such a style in Bollywood movies for sure. Also, there’s no slapstick, just good quality fun.

Of course, Avesham wouldn’t be the same without its stellar performances. Fahadh Faasil shines as an eccentric yet deeply sensitive goon, seamlessly blending humor, anger, fear, and action within a single frame. His portrayal is both captivating and multifaceted. That said, every member of the cast delivers remarkable performances, with Sajin Gopu standing out in particular, adding depth and intensity to the narrative.

Avesham is a Baar Baar watch.  It’s crazily hilarious, but could also run a chill down your spine.

There are a few others too- Bougainvillae, Anveshippin Kandettum, Guruvayoor Ambala Nadayil, and Sookshamadarshini which have made a mark in Indian cinema and had a good run in the box office.

What’s truly commendable about all these films is that, in addition to the positives I’ve mentioned, they are largely free from bloodshed, vulgarity, or violence against women. This is highly appreciable, making them suitable for viewing with the entire family—parents, children, and everyone in between. It’s the golden age of Malayalam cinema, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to all. If you appreciate intelligent, realistic, and clean entertainment, these films are definitely worth a watch.
