Rewinding romance -those SRK days
Having grown up as a kid glued to the TV screen, without blinking an eye, gazing at SRK, the theme “Romance Rewind” seems rather too close to home. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I would like to talk about my first and forever celeb crush, Shahrukh Khan. The only celebrity that has managed to keep me enchanted all these years.
Even though I have always been in awe of SRK, the ultimate “King of Romance,” the irony is that there is no romance in my life. My love for SRK can’t be defined or measured. He is a man who is loved by many across the seas and continents.
From Circus to Devdas
As a 4-year-old, I was impatient for school to get over, reach home, and sit and watch SRK in the TV serials Circus and Fauji. I guess that’s how it all started. Watching him act makes my day. The first movie that I watched in theatres was Devdas. There are innumerable times I have watched his films with the same interest and love as if it were the first time. There have been many times when I have rushed to the theatres to catch his movie’s first day and first show.
Tears for SRK in movies? You’re not alone!
In fact, I do remember my dad telling me about a friend of his who would leave the theatre in case SRK’s character was about to die in the movie. That reminds me of how I would also weep when his character died. Such is the love that some fans have for him, that they can’t bear to see such an end.
Delhi boy to Bollywood legend
At a time when everyone thought that, in order to make it big in Bollywood, you needed to have a godfather, here was a simple Delhi boy, an outsider with dreams in his eyes. People say that stardom fades. It is true to an extent, but here is a man who has come so far with a career spanning more than three decades, breaking all myths and records.
It is not just him as an actor; it is his struggle and journey, his charm, his wit, his humour, his intellect, and his overall persona that draw me to him. His stances on patriotism, stardom, religion, politics, women, success, and failure are things worth listening to. His aura is unmatched. He is an inspiration and a gem, indeed! Oh, and not to miss his captivating eyes, his smile, and those dimples that are to die for.
A man who has managed to win and rule over hearts across all generations. His iconic pose with his arms spread wide is like him trying to embrace all the love that he receives.
How can I forget the time when, as a 9th grader, I went to Mumbai and stood in front of Mannat, all the while wanting to meet him? Or the times when I have kept a cutout of his articles and movie posters. Every year on Valentine’s Day, I tune in to watch one of his movies; it has become sort of a ritual now. Not to miss how jubiliant I was when he answered one of my questions on an Instagram live session while promoting Pathaan.
SRK as Raj, Rahul, Veer, Samar, Mohan, Dev, Aman, Ram, Kabir, Rizwaan, Raees, Dr. Jehangir Khan, Pathaan, and Hardy, to name a few, are my favourites. SRK is a genre in itself; it is my most favourite Bollywood genre.
He transcends gender
He is one such actor who is equally loved by all genders. I have more male friends, who are his fans compared to my female friends. Such is his charm that he makes everyone gush over him.
Someone who adores SRK is someone I instantly take a liking for.
Picking a favorite movie? Impossible!
If asked to pick one favourite movie of his, I can’t because each film of his, every character of his echoes and touches my heart. I would state some favourites, like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Main Hoon Naa, Veer Zara, Swades, My Name is Khan, Chak de India, Jawan, and Dunki, to name a few. Best being the ones where he has donned the uniform.
Every character echoes in my heart
How can I not talk about him playing negative characters in Baazigar, Darr, Anjaam and Don. He is one of those rare actors who ensures that even when he plays the role of a villain, someone with a bad character who receives a fatal end.
Watching him in double roles is like a treat. Be it in movies like Duplicate, Baadshah, Karan Arjun, Don, Om Shanti Om, Fan, and Jawan where the grey-haired SRK just swayed people’s hearts. Its not just him playing the lead roles, but also him in cameos in movies like Heyy Baby, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Brahmastra, Laal Singh Chaddha, to name a few, have been crowd-pullers.
2023’s comeback was his, and ours!
2023 was yet another year where, after a long lull, Shah Rukh Khan just melted everyone’s heart and ruled the box office. His victory seemed like a personal one. Audiences dancing to the tunes of his songs, waiting for him outside his house on his birthday is a spectacle in itself.
On a personal note, I wish to see him in roles like Kabir in Chak de India, Mohan in Swades, Rizwan in My Name is Khan, and Dr. Jehangir Khan in Dear Zindagi. These characters left an impact and made us ponder topics like patriotism, self-love, and mental health.
My Mannat is to meet him someday!
I won’t say I am a die-hard romantic, but I am a SRK fan for sure. For now, I would just have to make do with a picture of mine with his wax statue. I would like to end by saying that I wish my Mannat (dream) of meeting him comes true one fine day. I think time will stand still when I meet him.
Last but not least, you can love him or hate him, but you just can’t ignore him.
