New beginnings in the new year…
New beginnings in the new year, new resolutions, new ideas, new plans, and new gym memberships—we’ve seen them and heard them all.
How about trying something truly new this year? How about discarding the old ideas that have long pulled us back and going ahead with new thoughts that will bring in a better tomorrow?
Practice what we preach…
We all are experts at giving advice, but often fail when we must follow our own. We move into a new millennium but with old superstitions and backward ways of life. Sometimes we do not even realize how old fashioned or out of date our thoughts are, unless we adopt the perspective of an outsider.
Do you as a wife/girlfriend/mother, still scrutinize every action of your spouse but expect complete loyalty in turn? Do you look for a fair girl to marry your brother and a govt employee with a well-paying job for your sister, while being a profound feminist in public? Do you ill treat your doorman’s child when he asks you for a treat or kick the neighbourhood dog when he loiters near your doorstep while being a devout lady who distributes alms in plenty in front of her place of worship?
Such examples are aplenty, and we can go on. But I guess as the reader of this piece, you have already got the drift. If you, or I or anyone of us has answered YES to some of the questions above, let us introspect for a while. Are we turning into people whom we disliked and imbibing into our habits those of racism, pseudo feminism, hypocrisy and hate mongering? Its never too late to let go. Of bad habits and thoughts. Of incorrect decisions and undeserving people in our lives.
So this new year, what can we do?
Power of Positive thoughts..
Let’s bring in positive thoughts in 2025. Let’s do things we love. Let’s take up hobbies we loved but which we lost on the way to adulthood and duties. Let’s connect with ourselves and truly be a better person than today!
My thoughts on a few target elements that deserve a fresh start with us –
· Connect with your inner self
Sometimes what we need is to reflect and recollect the special moments and revisit the not-so-great moments to understand ourselves better
· Take up an old hobby or get yourself a new one
After all, with the internet at your disposal, the world’s your oyster. Order the art kit, the paint box, the crochet set or the photography tips…let’s get going
· Get in touch with your friends and family
Pals and cousins and neighbours who were once a piece of our heart, but time blew them away. We always mean to call and visit but somehow there’s never enough bandwidth on our calendars. Well, this is the time. There’s never a better therapy for the soul
· Respect your body and get a fitness regime going
This isn’t about taking the gym membership and getting on the bandwagon. It’s about whatever floats your boat. Practice yoga, do strength training, get a hiking bike for trails, run in the mornings at your local park, take a brisk walk during lunch break. Just remember, the only one who can be trusted to take care of you is YOU.
· Let go of toxic relationships
This is something we all should do but end up procrastinating. What are we still doing with the divorced ex’s phone number, or pining over the boyfriend who cheated on us? Can this year be finally the one when we free ourselves of the burden? If colleagues are backstabbing and friends are being selfish…walk on and keep walking 😊
· Travel
This would be on any list that I make no matter at what time in my life. Travel opens our eyes to new people, places, cultures and ways of life. We realize how different people live their lives and how much we need to appreciate our differences to truly visualize our place in this world. Save money and spend on travel, is the mantra for every travel enthusiast!
· Read the work of masters, it’s never out of context and never outdated.
Whenever you have time, do read. Books written in different eras bring different perspectives to the forefront and broaden our horizon. But if not interested, the latest paperback did no harm. And it is always a great idea to support our indie writers, give them a shot in the arm.
Life is short. Let us work to create a beautiful year ahead. Remember, you have a blank diary with 365 brand new pages, let’s make every moment count. And if we want to take it easy as we enter the new year and gradually pick up pace…well that’s a good idea too 😉
