Celebrating Harvest

As the chillness of winter spreads in,

The body and soul seek some warmth.

Festivities bring in the harmony of togetherness,

Across the nation, in different names.

Sankranti marks the transit of the sun,

To the zodiac of Makara,

It’s the Indian thanksgiving,

To nature, the farmers, and the farm animals.

The food blends with nature,

With til* and sarson*,

Gud*, sugarcane and lentils,

Bringing warmth to the body.

Forget the past and move forward,

Said through Lohri and Bhogi,

Speak good after eating ellu* and bella*,

It is said in Kannada.

Pongal, Makar Sankranti, Uttrain,

Sankranti, Uttarayana, Bihu, Suggi,

Different names celebrating the harvest,

With the same fervour and excitement.
