The house rang with joy and laughter. It was one of those happy weekends when the entire family had sat down for a game of cards after a heavy Sunday lunch.
After a few rounds of their favourites, their interest on the game dwindled, but, kindled fond memories that gave way to interesting chatter among them.
“We used to play cards every evening during our vacations. Quite a big group we were. People in the neighbourhood called us The Cards Gang,” she said.
“Oooohh! Was that how you met him?” asked Nisha, the youngest member of the family.
“Hmmm…could be. His family had later shifted to a different city and I’d forgotten all about him,” came an off-handed reply from her.
Somebody harrumphed in the group which was now brimming with giggles and chuckles.
“Tell us more, please,” coaxed Nisha.
“Well, one fine day, he sends a post with… 8 and 9 Heart cards.”
“Cryptic.” She thought for a while and exclaimed, “H…I…Hi?”
“You’re right. Soon arrives another post carrying ‘A’ Heart card with a letter mentioning that he’d aced the UPSC exams.”
“Wow! How thoughtful! I love the messages,” quipped Nisha and sat up straight to hear more of the story.
“Months later, suddenly comes another post with 1, 4, and 3 Heart cards along with his phone number,” she said and glanced towards her partner.
Whistles ran through the family.
“What a proposal!! Did you send a reply to him?” Nisha couldn’t contain her excitement.
“Ahem… Your Dadi sent me a K Heart card with a mile-long love letter,” said the oldest man in the family looking at his wife of forty years.
“Oh my, Dada! That’s the cutest and the most quirky proposal I’ve ever known,” Nisha clapped in amazement.
Dadi smiled. Everybody laughed.
