Being Women

Menstrual Pain & Homeopathy; There Lies The Solution For Your Period Pains!

Homeopathy, an alternative medicine can work wonders in case of severe menstrual pain. Dr Aparna, a homeopath tells us how to cope and manage severe menstrual pain.

‘Just as women’s bodies are softer than men’s, so their understanding is sharper.’

So says the Italian poet, Christine De Pizan. But does that mean we pay little attention to the calling of these softer bodies and douse its feeble call till it stops asking for help? To call a woman’s body soft or tough is a debate for another day. My concern is that we listen to the fine creaking sounds that our body emits so that larger troubles are avoided.

Let’s get to talking about one common symptom many of us complain of; Menstrual Pain!

Menstrual Pain

Dysmenorrhoea or menstrual cramps/pain , as we identify them is a monthly agony paralyzing many women for those four days. These pains are normal in a way, so acceptance to some extent is necessary. Hot bag fomentation, hydration, and adequate rest help to tide you over. For some women, the pain is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. In such cases, though there is no evident medical emergency, the woman feels debilitated.

Here, homoeopathy comes to your rescue. Homoeopathy is an age-old system of medicine yet it has evolved to suit the needs of modernity. The medicines don’t put you to sleep or cause side effects. The best part is the sweet pill can be repeated as often as the need arises without the fear of toxicity.

Each woman is a different wonder in herself and hence, each woman must find her own individualistic medicine. Every woman has a different menstrual cycle. In fact, in the same lady, two menstrual cycles may not be the same. Then why the same generalized painkillers? She must receive special care and individual attention even where medicine is concerned.

How does a homoeopath help here?

A homoeopath notes down the woman’s personality traits, her mental state during menstruation, the characteristics of her pain, what makes her feel better, what worsens her, and other paraphernalia associated with the monthly flow. A single drug or a group of drugs is then prescribed to suit her special needs. These drugs are to be taken in between the menses when the hormonal activity is at its peak. This attitude helps us plan the monthly agony and work towards it before it consumes the woman’s working capacity.

Popping painkillers or restricting yourself to the bed during the flow is mere negligence of a long-standing problem. Digging the well when thirsty, type of attitude.

What can I do to help myself during menses?

-If you are a chronic sufferer of menstrual cramps, get to the root cause of it. Heredity? Fibroids? Infection? Abnormal pregnancy?

-Get sonography done with doctor consultation.

-Once the problem is identified the doctor works in the specified direction.

-After receiving the medications, maintain a diary of every menstrual period. Observe the flow, the intensity of cramps, the frequency of repetition of severe cramps in a day, and other accompanying symptoms like headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, etc.

-Make a note of your mental state as well.

What can I do in between the cycles to avoid the pain?

-The first thumb rule is to take your medications on time. Not missing a single dose and consuming it with a positive frame of mind.

Eat healthily. By that I mean, to include more protein in the form of sprouts, eggs, fish milk, curd, and similar plant and animal proteins. Do not skip on micronutrients and to include them in your diet, munch on nuts and seeds.

-Practice yoga and meditation to strengthen your pelvic muscles and calm your mind.

Speak to women who are facing similar issues. This gives you the confidence that you are not alone in this. But take care of not suggesting medicines to each other. If you really care for the other woman, take her to your doctor and not suggest to her the medicines prescribed for you.

-Remember you are unique and hence, your homoeopathic medicine, too, is unique to you. Among thousands of drugs, the homoeopath has customized the medicine for you.

Finally, enjoy the process of being a woman and the gift of menstruation that enables you to bring another little human into your life. The pains will become bearable and womanhood, a celebration!
