Being Women

Review of Khakee: The Bihar Chapter

The Bihar Chapter is an Indian crime thriller series streaming on Netflix. Created and written by Neeraj Pandey , the web series consists of eight riveting episodes.

A righteous IPS officer Amit Lodha and a ruthless criminal Chandan Mahto find themselves on opposite ends of a dense action-packed battle in Bihar. But it is no cakewalk for the former as he has to navigate through moral dilemmas in a corruption-ridden world. On the other hand, the latter has no such scruples and is ready to kill children and old people in cold blood to further his cause.

Like every gangster drama, the antagonist has a background. Hailing from a state obsessed with caste, Chandan belongs to the oppressed and the neglected. His jail mate Chyawanprash Sahu, who later becomes his trusted aide, justifies their rebellion by citing the episode of Eklavya receiving an unfair deal from Dronacharya in the Mahabharata. On the contrary, Lodha never divulges his caste. All the viewers know is that he is from Rajasthan.

I liked the portrayal of women in this series. Mrs. Lodha is not the ever-cringing wife; a stereotype Bollywood never fails to thrust in our faces. Being the daughter of a decorated IPS officer, she is aware of the hassles and often chides her husband for not handling a situation with maturity. Meera Devi is another smart woman who deserves a special mention. I just wish her character was etched better.

The series never lags in pace. It is an edge-of-the-seat thriller, keeping the viewers enthralled. The end is predictable, but the execution never falters. The Bihari dialect is spot on.

Karan Tacker as the protagonist Amit Lodha is brilliant and holds his own in the presence of stalwarts like Ashutosh Rana, Abhimanyu Singh and Anup Soni. But it is Avinash Tiwary as Chandan Mahto who steals the show. His metamorphosis from an exploited underdog to a dreaded rebel is convincing. The cameo roles by Vinayak Pathak as the outgoing Chief Minister of Bihar & Ravi Kishen as a selfish thug are not wasted.

In a nutshell, this is a web series worth binging.
